Join the club

Turn up on a Wednesday

That is the whole process. No application, no dues, no prerequisite. Below is everything you would otherwise have to ask someone.

Interest meeting

Come to our first meeting of the year

Everything starts here. Find out what the club actually does, meet the team, and pick a track. No experience needed and nothing to bring — just show up.

Date

Wednesday, September 9

Time

3:45 – 5:00 PM

Where

Room W431 · West building

Three steps

What joining actually involves

  1. Come to a meeting

Walk in on any Wednesday after school. There is no form to fill in, no tryout, and nobody checks whether you have done this before. Sit anywhere.

  2. Get on Remind

Text @creekcyber to 81010. Room changes, competition sign-ups and cancelled meetings all go out there, and it is the only thing you have to do to stay in the loop.

  3. Pick a track when you are ready

In the autumn that means joining a CyberPatriot team; in the spring it means signing up for a CTF. Neither is required. Plenty of members just come on Wednesdays.

Before you come

Nothing to prepare

Bring a laptop, or do not
School machines are in the room
Come alone or bring people
Both are normal. Nobody will make you introduce yourself

Before you ask

The questions we actually get

Mostly from people standing in the doorway deciding whether to come in.

Do I need any experience?
No, and most of us had none. Meetings start from the beginning every autumn, and the practice problems have an easy end. If you can use a laptop you can start here.
Do I have to compete?
No. Competitions are the loudest part of the club but they are opt-in. Coming to learn is a complete way to be a member.
What do I bring?
A laptop if you own one, since you will want your own setup eventually. If you do not, there are school machines in the room and that is genuinely fine — say so and someone will get you on one.
What if I miss a meeting?
Nothing happens. The slides from every session go up under Resources, so you can catch up on the one you missed and come back the next week.
Can I join partway through the year?
Yes. People turn up in January every year and it works out. The spring is capture-the-flag rather than defence, so it is a clean place to start.
Is it just for seniors and people already in CS classes?
No. Freshmen through seniors, and no computer-science coursework is assumed. CreekCTF exists specifically because we wanted something our newest members could win at.

Still stuck

Ask an officer

A real person reads this address. If you would rather know what you are walking into before you walk into it, that is a completely normal thing to want.
